Photography Training with Model Coral Patrick

Photography Training Session with Dennis Wake and Model Coral Patrick

I ran a competition recently to win a one to one photography training session with me at Acklam Hall near Middlesbrough. Dennis Wake was the lucky winner and we ran the session yesterday afternoon at Acklam Hall. The session consisted of a preparatory discussion about Dennis's experience as a photographer to date and what he wanted to get from the coaching. We covered some thoughts on camera settings, lens choice, lighting, posing and location and how that might be used when we did the shoot outdoors.

We were then joined by model Coral Patrick for a 2 hour practical demonstration photoshoot. This took place in the grounds of Acklam Hall where I am based - it's the idea location for this type of session because it is quiet and there is so much variety with the hall, gardens, parkland, woods and the pond as a backdrop. I hadn't worked with Coral before but she was brilliant and a true professional - totally at ease in front of the camera and very willing to work through ideas with Dennis and myself on the day. Coral was Miss Newcastle 2016 and is an accomplished dancer. Dennis hadn't shot any models before so this was a new experience. It was great to see how his approach developed during the session itself - by the end he was confidently directing Coral and it looked like he had been doing this for years.

During the session, we took a range of images and explored ways to use natural light, flash (speedlights on and off camera as well as high speed sync) and finally continuous LED light (by Rotolight - the new Aeos lights). You can see some examples we shot in the gallery - all are 'straight out of the camera' with no lightroom or photoshop editing. Post-processing is an important skill but something to cover off on another session but I thought it would be good to share some of the images we took unedited.

I enjoyed coaching the session and I know Dennis got a lot out of the day. Thanks Dennis and Coral for a great shoot!
